Historical Legacy of National Chinese Medicine Day

National Chinese Medicine Day is observed annually on March 17 and serves as an important occasion jointly commemorated and celebrated by the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) community across both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The establishment of this day traces back to a historic event nearly a century ago, which was pivotal to the preservation and survival of traditional Chinese medicine.

In 1929, the Central Health Committee of the then Nationalist Government passed a proposal titled “Abolish Old Medicine (Traditional Chinese Medicine) to Eliminate Obstacles to Public Health,” attempting to gradually eliminate TCM. This decision caused a nationwide uproar within the Chinese medicine community.

In protest, on March 17 of the same year, 281 representatives of TCM from 17 provinces and cities, representing more than 200 organizations, gathered in Shanghai to convene the National Assembly of Medical Organizations. They voiced strong slogans such as “Promote Chinese Medicine to Resist Cultural Invasion” and “Promote Chinese Materia Medica to Resist Economic Invasion,” and organized a petition delegation to Nanjing to oppose the proposal.

Ultimately, through the reasoned efforts of many prominent advocates, the proposal was forced to be withdrawn. To commemorate this victory and to honor the survival of traditional Chinese medicine, members of the TCM community jointly designated March 17 as “National Chinese Medicine Day.”

In 1931, Mr. Chen Lifu and others promoted the establishment of the “National Institute of Chinese Medicine,” laying a foundation for the academic organization and development of TCM and further solidifying the historical significance of National Chinese Medicine Day.
